A recently introduced bill, known as the Public Buildings Renewal Act of 2019, can provide a significant boost for the construction and rehabilitation of government-owned buildings. Roofing companies and manufacturers have since shown support for this bill. In this blog, Precision Roofing Inc. shares a look at this bill, and what it means for us as roofing contractors.
The Public Buildings Renewal Act of 2019
H.R. 1251, or The Public Buildings Renewal Act of 2019, is a bipartisan bill that would provide tax-exempt financing for repair, maintenance, and restoration work to federally-owned buildings around the country. Financing will be open to private contractors through partnerships with the US government. The bill is sponsored by U.S. Sen. Todd Young (R-IN), and co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and has been referred to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee for consideration.
Benefits of the Public Buildings Renewal Act
If passed, the Public Buildings Renewal Act can help expedite building repairs, maintenance, and repairs to public buildings, including government offices and public schools. It can help reduce downtime and unplanned repair work, which is usually due to structural damage due to age, or storm damage. For the general public, this can help improve government services. For roof installers like us, this means a potential increase in business, and if the demand is high, more jobs for locals.
The Need for Maintenance, Repairs, and Restoration
Just like residential and commercial properties, government buildings need proper maintenance and timely repairs. Many of these structures are historic, and will need additional care as some parts of the structure are way beyond their expected service lives. Unlike privately owned properties, funding for the care of such structures needs to undergo several stages of approval, during which many things can happen. Repairs and restoration can bring such landmarks on par with modern ones, and, keep them standing for generations.
